4 Tips For Transitioning Into a New Career

Finding your perfect career isn’t easy, but it doesn’t have to be scary, either.  Today, there are more job opportunities than ever before, and if you know how to navigate the process, you’ll find yourself landing your ideal job sooner than you think.  But before you can even think about what type of jobs might interest you, you’ll need first to take stock of the current situation in your life and evaluate if that is the right time for a career change.  Here are some tips to help you transition into a new vocation confidently and efficiently.

    1. Understand your current career situation

Like most people, you probably have no idea how you got into your career situation or what you do every day.  You might feel like you’re just spinning your wheels or even have concerns about your job security.  These are all valid concerns, but they also happen to be some of the biggest mistakes people make when transitioning into a new career.  If you have a vague idea of what you do right now, you have a better chance of finding something that complements your skills and interests.  If you have a clear idea of what you don’t like about your current job, you’re a step closer to finding a better fit.

    2. Decide If You’re Ready For A Career Change

The challenges of dissatisfaction in a career can have a negative impact on our mental health.  This can lead to the obvious appearance of stress, aging, weight gain, and internal health issues.  But more importantly, everyone deserves to be happy.  You deserve a career that will fulfill your inner desire for true happiness.  One that utilizes your talents and passions but doesn’t make you uncomfortable or depressed.  It’s not just about how tired you are of your job.  You can be exhausted but still, be happy in your career.  But if you’re exhausted, unfulfilled and sad?  It might be time to change careers.

    3. Assess Your Skills and Weaknesses

Before you think about finding a new career, you must assess your skills and weaknesses.  When you know where you excel, it’s easier to find a job that compliments those strengths.  To better understand your current skill set, you should update your resume frequently with new milestones, accomplishments, and contributions you have made in your current role.  Additionally, you compare your current set of skills to the potential career path you’re considering to identify any gaps in skills and experience.  This will help you understand and strategize how to improve upon any gaps.

    4. Be realistic with your goals

Some transitions are unlikely in the short term.  Don’t set yourself up for failure by setting unrealistic goals in unrealistic timeframes.  We overestimate what we can do in one year and underestimate what we can do in ten years.  You can change your industry, function, and geographical location, but all three are unlikely to change immediately.  Gradual change is often much more sustainable.

    The Bottom Line

Finding your perfect career can be exhilarating, but it can also be nerve-wracking.  Take stock of the current situation in your life and evaluate if that is the right time for a career change.  If you understand your current situation, you have a better chance of finding a career that complements your skills and interests.
